Pet Allergies

You may not know, but allergies are common in pets, especially seasonal allergies. An allergy can be considered a pet illness that affects a pet's quality of life whenever the trigger is present. Your cat or dog may experience inflamed sinuses, itchy eyes, sneezing, and even digestive issues. If you also notice that your pet is scratching himself too often, he may be suffering from an allergy. We at Sunset Lakes Animal Clinic in Miramar, FL, are here to help.

How Can You Help Your Pet with an Allergy?

Pet allergies can be painful and uncomfortable. If you notice symptoms of an allergy in your pet, it might be a good idea to contact a veterinarian. However, there are still some things you can do in order to help your pet with an allergy:

  • Clear the air and clean surfaces: Make sure you are changing air filters regularly inside your home so the air stays as clear as possible. You can also run an air conditioner or dehumidifier to get rid of allergens in the air. Also, clean surfaces in the house and vacuum when you can.
  • Change your pet's diet: If your pet is having a bad reaction to food, it may be a good idea to switch up his diet to see what is causing the problem. Once you identify the allergen, you can avoid giving it to your pet in the future.
  • Give your pet a bath: In order to prevent itchy and dry skin, your dog might benefit from a regular bath. You should use a shampoos that do not include the allergen and won’t trigger, or make worse, your pet’s symptoms. It may also be a good idea to take your dog or cat to a groomer.
  • Special treatment: If you notice that the allergy and its symptoms are not going away after several weeks, particularly if the symptoms are severe, you should take your four-legged friend to a veterinarian to discuss other possible treatment options.
